Deputy’s Firing Upheld In Parkland Shooting
Below are some links to the news stories regarding the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida (North Broward County) on Feb. 14, 2018 (Valentine’s Day, which should have been a day of love). On that day, 14 freshmen high school students and three staff members were murdered by a deranged man who was a former student of the school. He also seriously injured 18 more students that day and scarred families forever.
I had the honor and privilege of representing Broward Sheriff’s Office (“BSO”), which fired a former deputy for his failures that fateful day. As a first responder, instead of running toward the gunshots where the murders were occurring, as he was fully trained to do as a law enforcement officer, he ran away from them. He didn’t try to stop the shooter or to render aid to the students and staff that were bleeding out. He did nothing!
This former deputy, Edward Eason, filed for arbitration (a private lawsuit) against BSO. Finally, after almost seven years, the case was heard on the merits. Thankfully, the arbitrator (judge) sided with BSO, and Eason was denied getting his job back and hundreds of thousands of dollars of back pay.
